Thirsty discovered Elizabeth and the Catapult in January 2007 and introduced the group to our readers in a February 2007 Feature story. Then, because we were so excited by their talent, we followed up with an Interview in our March 2007 issue. We knew something big was in their future and much has happened to this remarkable trio along the way. Earlier this year they signed with Verve Music Group and worked with producer Mike Mogis (noted for his work with Bright Eyes, M. Ward and Rilo Kiley) on their first major album, entitled Taller Children.
Although this was the trio’s first tour and first time in Chicago, Thirsty talked with many in the crowd who had discovered Elizabeth on their own and were thrilled to finally hear her in person. Elizabeth's natural magnetism and innate cool combined with her Greenwich Village roots resonated through the wall-to-wall packed house on a rainy summer Friday night at Martyr’s in Chicago.
Elizabeth and the Catapult might be described as a neo-jazz, Brooklyn-based trio of Elizabeth Ziman on vocals, keyboard and guitar, Peter Lalish on guitar and Dan Molad on drums, with Emeen Zarookian on bass along for the tour, or really just a rocket ship of talent beginning its ascent. Watching people watching Elizabeth said it all. Her extraordinary voice and bursting energy simply captivated the room. Something very special was going on as everyone realized they were witnessing the rising of a new star.
The group’s set clung to the songs on their new release, but by far Taller Children, Momma’s Boy, Race You and Apathy won the day. Elizabeth’s vocals, however, shone brighter than the spotlights. Opening for Greg Laswell, well known for his many critical successes, Elizabeth and Greg shared the stage midway in her set for an inaugural duet of Elizabeth’s newest and most ethereal song, Guardian Angel, which was cheered by the enthusiastic crowd.
Do yourself a favor and catch Elizabeth and the Catapult live if you can. They are on a trajectory to stardom and you can be there to witness the early days as they tour the country.
